Bio
Awards winning photographer, Nicolas Villaume is specialized in social and portrait photography in demanding environments.
Whether in the Arctic documenting the Caribou people dealing with climate change, or following traditional Peruvian dancers living in the favellas of Lima, Villaume listens to the concerns of the locals and his work is characteristic of their voices–capturing images that document their daily lives. He works with various international NGO’s and cultural institutions including UNESCO, and his work has been published in international magazines such as Mother Jones, The Week, Boston Globe, Grands Reportages, National Geographic Newswatch, Americas Quarterly and several South American medias…
Villaume’s work reflects his strong commitment and sensitivity to human relationships and social dynamics, using a powerful combination of image and sound.
He travels the world with cameras and microphones looking for unexpected encounters with people we normally cannot reach, and then shares the emotional impact of these conversations with everyone through his work. Russia, China, Mongolia, and Laos are countries which have deeply influenced him. But it is especially with the South American people that he has developed strong links over time. He now lives between Lima and Paris.
Deeply concerned with both the fragility and richness of cultural diversity, in 2004 he created the French association Conversations du Monde. This association focuses on promoting oral tradition and cultural awareness using the emotional power of combined arts (photography, videos, digital voice recordings and the Internet).
Conversations du monde
Conversations du Monde creates quality multimedia exhibitions with grass-roots communities leading to international exhibitions in museums and educational organizations.
The first project developed at the international level was the Voices from the Andes exhibition tour in South America and France. In addition, he co-founded the NGO Living Cultural Storybases.
These projects aim to preserve and disseminate the world’s oral traditions that are in peril of extinction, in order to make new generations conscious of their ancestral cultural legacy. Villaume’s last involvment can be seen in the Conversations with the Earth initiative, which presents indigenous voices on Climate Change to the world.
